Why do we need a patient-centred angina website?
Angina.org Editor. Professor Michael R. Chester
Angina sufferers and their families say that they often feel ‘disconnected’ from the decision-making process. A particular problem with hospital specialists is that they nearly always seem to be in a hurry and often explain things in ways that are confusing. They don’t mean to, but it happens. Even when patients have carefully planned what they want to ask the doctors, they forget or find themselves tongue-tied when it comes to saying it.
Angina.org is a patient-centred angina web-book created for angina patients and their families who want to be more involved in decisions that affect their health and well being. It is specifically designed to enable angina sufferers to take advantage of an innovative approach to treating illness and promoting health, called patient-centred care.
Patient-centredness encourages mutual respect between patients and healthcare professionals and only works if patients understand the issues. That isn’t easy and over the past fourteen years our patients have helped us to understand how to communicate complex ideas in ways angina patients and their families can relate to.
There are many other sources of information for angina sufferers. It seems that every day there are media reports of a new wonder cure or a problem with an existing treatment. Big business has deep pockets and uses its influence to promote its interests. There is always a grain of truth in the reports but it can be difficult to sort out fact from spin. We will do our best to put things into proper context in language you can understand.
What sets Angina.org apart is that it is written in patient-friendly language by the founder and former director of the NHS National Refractory Angina Centre who pioneered patient-centred angina care in the UK.
Healthcare professionals interested in patient-centred angina care will find the insights helpful.
Angina.org generates no income and receives no sponsorship from multi national device manufacturers or pharmaceutical companies.
Angina.org’s sponsors are Virtual Angina & Patient-Centred Solutions Ltd and the National Refractory Angina Carer & Patient Support Group.
